One budget, the whole family: which AI subscription to pick?

A family at the kitchen table with a phone and a laptop, choosing an AI subscription

An AI subscription in the family budget is no longer exotic — it is just another monthly payment next to Netflix and Spotify. Unlike the movie services, though, it is easier to get this one wrong: the prices look identical, but what a family actually receives for them differs dramatically.

In this post we compare the three most popular subscriptions — Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude — from a practical family’s perspective: 2–3 children, a budget of €20–30 a month, email on Gmail, almost no coding, and one family member who needs strong Latvian and Russian language skills every day.

The short answer: for most families like this, a single Google AI Pro subscription is the best value. Below is why — and when the answer changes.

The prices are nearly identical — the difference is elsewhere

As of July 2026, the flagship plans in Europe (VAT included) cost practically the same:

  1. Google AI Pro — €21.99 a month; includes the latest Gemini models and 5 TB of storage for Gmail, Drive and Photos.
  2. ChatGPT Plus — €22.99 a month; OpenAI also offers the cheaper ChatGPT Go tier at roughly €8–10 a month.
  3. Claude Pro — around €22 a month.

With prices this close, the deciding question becomes: how many people can actually use the subscription?

The deciding factor: family sharing

This is where the three contenders differ the most:

  • A Google AI Pro subscription can be shared with up to five family members at no extra cost — and each member gets their own independent usage limits. One payment, up to six users.
  • ChatGPT has no family plan: every user needs their own subscription.
  • Claude has no family plan either — and, as we will see below, it is closed to children entirely.

Nearly the same price — a completely different reach.

The family arithmetic is brutal. Two ChatGPT Plus subscriptions cost €45.98 — far over budget. ChatGPT Go for three people fits the budget (around €24–30) but with tighter limits than Plus. One Google AI Pro at €21.99 covers both parents and the kids — each with their own Pro-level limits.

Kids: age rules matter more than prices

For a family with 2–3 children, this is the part the marketing pages rarely highlight:

  • Gemini — the only one of the three where a child’s access can be managed by parents: Gemini works with Family Link supervised accounts, including children under 13 when a parent enables access. Teen accounts get additional content protections.
  • ChatGPT — from age 13; OpenAI offers parental controls with linked parent and teen accounts. It is not intended for younger children.
  • Claude18 and over only, with age verification. Children and teenagers cannot use Claude at all.

If your email lives on Gmail

For this family every mailbox is on Gmail — and here, too, Google plays on home turf. Gemini is built directly into Gmail: summaries, draft replies and inbox search work with zero extra setup, on the same Google account. And the subscription’s 5 TB of storage means Gmail itself will never be full again.

To be fair, the competitors can reach your inbox as well. Both ChatGPT and Claude offer Gmail and Google Calendar connectors on their paid plans — they need to be set up separately, but they work well. The difference is convenience, not possibility.

Latvian and Russian

In Russian, all three flagship models are excellent — it is one of the most widely represented languages in AI training data, and in practice the differences are minimal.

In Latvian the picture is more nuanced. The best models speak Latvian convincingly, but a small gap to English remains: in the LAG-MMLU study, the strongest model scored 88.8% on knowledge tests in Latvian versus 92.8% in English. In practice this means two things:

  1. Choose a paid tier. Free plans often run on smaller models, which make the most mistakes precisely in Latvian — inflections, terminology, diacritics.
  2. Test with your own texts. All three services have a free tier — spend a week asking each one to write and edit exactly the kinds of texts you write: emails, applications, school assignments, in both languages.

If you live in the Apple ecosystem

At WWDC 2026 Apple finally unveiled the new Siri AI — and its brain is built in collaboration with Google on Gemini models. The Apple ecosystem is now officially leaning toward Gemini.

But no rush: Siri AI only reaches users as an iOS 27 beta in late 2026, and for iPhone and iPad users in the European Union it will not be available at first for regulatory reasons. ChatGPT remains available as an Apple Intelligence extension, and all three apps — Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude — already work perfectly well on an iPhone today.

The takeaway for an Apple household: in the long run the Gemini case gets even stronger, but today in Latvia it does not really change the decision.

Our recommendation: how to split a €20–30 budget

For most families: one Google AI Pro at €21.99 a month. The whole family with their own limits, kids supervised via Family Link, Gemini inside Gmail, 5 TB of storage. Keep the remaining ~€8 in your pocket — or add ChatGPT Go for the household’s heaviest user as a second opinion (about €30 in total).

If the family has one intensive user and free versions are enough for everyone else: ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro for that one person, free Gemini and ChatGPT for the rest.

Claude we recommend as a personal tool for an adult who writes a lot — its Latvian and Russian prose is stylistically among the best. But it is not a family solution: there is no sharing, and it is closed to the household’s youngest members.
